After the crossover appeal of Designer, I didn't warm initially to Warm Chris's more insular sound. Contra the title, the stripped down approach sounded like an artist retreating into the distance, kind of stand-offish. But I now think it's the opposite. Warm Chris is a remarkably brave record, both vulnerable and confident in its melodic idiosyncrasies. It asks to be loved...no, it KNOWS it will be loved on its own terms, terms enough to make it one of the year's best.
