Mountain Brews
04:12
|
|||
Sunday morning, why don’t we go for a hike?
Meet in the trailhead lot around a quarter to three
Me and Bobby stayed out late last night
Get on the trail and shake the cobwebs free
As we get to the top of the mountain there’s a view
Take a load off and crack a few Mountain Brews
Mountain Brews
Sweet Mountain Brews
Mountain Brews
Sweet as a morning dew
Have another brew as we look out over the town
The highway’s far away, it ain’t making a sound
All of the buildings look like dominos
Wouldn’t take much for them to topple and go
So here we sit soaking up this view
Let’s head down, we’re outta those Mountain Brews

Tequila Noon
03:51
|
|||
I was down on Riverside
“No Tox Life” on a billboard wide
Concrete bakes on a tennis court
My vanity, my “Last Resort”
It did not land, my shot was long
A blurry line, my aim was wrong
You and I don’t have much to fight about
The tumbleweed and dust
Sweep it if you must
Tequila noon and the lime must be to blame
I was up before the light
Fixed a cup and had a bite
Sun comes up as I stand outside
And watch the dew begin to dry
It did not close, the door was wide
A gush of air, what a freezing ride
You and I don't have much to talk about
The tumbleweed and dust
Sweep it if you must
Tequila noon with a lemon or a lime

Strong Choice
02:18
|
|||
It's a strong choice my friend
For you to show up with a hand to lend
And it's good to see you're in town
I hadn't heard that you were around
And look at you rolling on through
Showing up here with a case of brew
Would you help me unload my van?
I've been busting my ass doing the best I can
Don't know how to feel
If my Gratefulness is taking over
It's a hell of a deal
Like a horseshoe or a four-leaf clover
It's a strong choice my friend
For you to show up with some time to spend
And it all weighs out in the end
You never break, you always bend
Don't know how to deal
With the hand you’ve dealt that now you're lending
It's a whole different feel
To put a price upon the time we're spending
Oh it's a real strong choice my friend

You Eagled
02:40
|
|||
Far away, where the grass is green
Past the sand, past the trampoline
Park the car in the shade in the lot
It's 9 AM, it’s gonna get hot
I ain't ever gonna Eagle again
Try as I might, I'll never win
I ain’t ever gonna feel this way
At first it stings, then it fades away
What's it like for your songs to age?
Ten, twenty, thirty, forty years on the page
Play those tunes until you're dead
We drive around with those songs in our head
First you Eagled, but the next drive was far
Birdie, albatross, bogey and par
Go tell the caddy to fix us a drink
Cooler of beer and there's limes by the sink

Let It Grow
03:47
|
|||
I am a country boy
I am mother nature's son
I am a ramblin’ man
Me and the Boys are a Band on the Run
When I am home with you
We sit in the shade of the tree
Lie back on the shady lawn
As the birds fly silent and free
We gotta let it grow
Give it time and a little sunlight
In this garden we built together
We got to let it grow
We gotta let it grow
Whether these weeds are what we had planted
In this garden we built together
We gotta let it grow
When to push and when to fight
And when to do nothing at all?
Will roots grow on their own
With no help but a little rainfall?
On the last day of the world
I would want to plant a tree
I'd dig a hole in the ground
And watch the clouds pass over its leaves

Sweet Chili Heat
03:58
|
|||
Oh yeah, have one on me
Of that sweet, sweet, chili heat
Oh yeah, let's take it deep
With that sweet, sweet chili heat
“Dead Night” in the 'Dena at the Old Towne Pub
Two sets at a beer bar –– we're drinking mostly Bud
But sometimes, I gotta take a nip
Something with heat, something with kick
So fill that flask with tequila if you please
Oh yeah, have one on me
Of that sweet, sweet, chili heat
Oh yeah, let's take it deep
There's plenty to share, there's more than I need
Got a gig this weekend out in Joshua Tree
I fill the cooler with beer and Field’s got the weed
In the desert when the sun sets there
There's a chill in the wind, a nip in the air
I need something to warm me from my head to my feet
Oh yeah, have one on me
Of that sweet, sweet, chili heat
Oh yeah, let's take it deep
Drink to your friends and those that lie beneath
Got practice on Monday, rehearsal we could use
Learning “Cream Puff War” and “Mexicali Blues”
I almost always bring a case
To load up the fridge down in the practice space
I can't forget the Sweet Chili or I'll fall asleep
Oh yeah, have one on me
Of that sweet, sweet, chili heat
Oh yeah, let's take it deep
Drink to your friends and those that lie beneath

It's My Masterpiece
04:24
|
|||
Gentlemen of other times
Had so much they didn't know
They could tell the time of day from the shadow of a stone
They could build cathedrals
A tribute to the unknown
But would they lack conviction
If they were staring at their phones?
I don't really know
I don't really care
The world keeps on turning
We breathe the same air
Many other societies have and will exist
In painstaking detail, they're heading for an abyss
Maybe some cobblestones and great paintings do survive
But earth is for the living
Appetites and drive
I don't really know
I don't really care
The world keeps on turning
We breathe the same air
I don't really know
How could I care?
The world keeps on burning
We breathe the same air
With such great dimension
They carved out of wood
Years of toil intact, an impression has withstood
And look at the painting
In the dim light on the wall
Will it hang forever, to be adored and loved by all?
It's my masterpiece!

The Dead Don't Count
02:23
|
|||
Same time, I don't know why
It's all a love, a different lie
This is a time that I won’t buy
The love is ours but I can't try
All alone, I float my time
This is a time I never knew
This would be Tee but I can't do
Oh life, go blowing through
Don't know if I'm going
Don't know if I'm doing any more
I know that I'm going down
I can't believe I'll go with crowd
They want to see the ship at sail
Overboard, but I won't drown
I see the staff at hand
I see release, the Dead don't count
So to believe the thread I count
They don't know what I'm showing

Raised in a Place
05:18
|
|||
I was raised in a place
That’s become a disgrace
Everything that I once knew
Now there is no trace
The pumpkin patch, the fall harvest
Has been paved with a new Target
They called it progress
But for who?
They told us all, but it's only a few
They tore the old buildings down
Replaced them all with beige and brown
What do I see when I drive around?
It's all the same
From town to town
From town to town
Where'd it go, Where we been?
Now I can't stand this place
After so many years away
It's all just been erased
I was raised in a place
So far away from here

Spring Wind
05:00
|
|||
Spring Wind blows this time each year
A fresh breeze, the hummingbirds are here
From Mexico, they ride the Northern winds
Way up to Alaska and back down again
They feed on pollen like a bee
Nature’s helicopters, so stationary
Can they hover way up in the sky?
Or do they remain, tethered by their size?
Spring Wind
Watch the grass start to grow
Spring Wind
And see the mountain rock exposed
Spring Wind
Hear the rustle of the leaves
Spring Wind
Of the Eucalyptus tree
In the yard, they come to build a nest
Take a little breather, catch a bit of rest
From the feeder, it’s a tonic that they drink
Some refined sugar and water from our sink
June comes and with it comes the Gloom
Winds begin to die, the heat is coming soon
Spring Wind blows pollen from the trees
And makes my eyes water, brings about a sneeze

Lately things don't seem the same
I can't focus on anything
Sure, I'll go to the baseball game
I watch the players, I don't know their names
But I think I know what'll cheer me up
Some sweet chili heat in a cup
Mix it with a sweet and salty brew
For 15 dollars, it oughta do
But it was the worst margarita
The worst margarita
It was the worst margarita
Of my life
How could a team treat their fans like this?
They make their money, they don't give a shit
I swear it was flat Mountain Dew
Mixed with tequila for a noxious brew
Maybe I should just go buy a beer
Gaze at the distance from the upper tier
The air is hot and stagnant still
I'm three sips in, I think I had my fill
Of the worst margarita
The worst margarita
It was the worst margarita
Of my life
Some corn chips and yellow sludge
I pound a dog, I don't give a fudge
This always happens, I know it will
I leave the park feeling physically ill
The parking lot tonight is moving slow
Drunk drivers with nowhere to go
We may maybe have to wait a while
Sober up now, boys, in single file

Big Bummer Hotel
04:50
|
|||
So here I am out on my own
Away from the wife and kids
Wouldya believe that I’m four beers deep
And I’m crushing the minifridge
We were done at two o’clock
The meeting didn’t go well
So here I am, drinking by myself
At the Big Bummer Hotel
Where you are
You can never tell
At the Big Bummer Hotel
A swimming pool
Or the Gates of Hell
At the Big Bummer Hotel
All alone, neither here nor there
And the hour is getting late
Up to the roof to get some air
And maybe tempt some sort of fate
I was done, maybe years ago
When it fades it’s hard to tell
So here I am drinking by myself
At the Big Bummer Hotel
Another day
And I’m not doing well
At the Big Bummer Hotel
I can’t believe
Just how far I fell
At the Big Bummer Hotel

Earthquake Country
04:06
|
|||
It’s a good thing you live in SoCal
Where the sun it always shines
But you’ll never go more than a few days
Without the dust getting in your eyes
They say that life has its trade-offs
Well I got one for you
To live where it’s always sunny
But where the ground could split in two
I’m driving down the freeway
I feel a rumble all around
Is it the earth a-quaking?
How stable is this ground?
It’s an 18-wheeler gaining speed
Passing me on the right
Sixteen tons of rubber and steel
Rips past me into the night
And it’s earthquake country
Keeping me up at night
Yeah it’s earthquake country
No the world doesn’t seem right
I’m lying in my bed at night
Spiraling in a dark zone
As I’m scrolling through a wasteland
I feel a rumbling in my bones
Could it be the Big One?
As I leap up out of my bed
And in that same split second
I see where all my fears have led
There’s no need to panic
The house is standing strong
The night is cool and quiet
My baby sleeping all along
We all live in earthquake country
In our own peculiar way
A rabid dog or a gamma ray
We’re just trying to keep the wolves at bay
Yeah to keep the wolves at bay

Here in the Shade
03:42
|
|||
Can’t you feel the sunshine burning on your neck?
To the buzzards overhead, you’re just a tiny speck
Gonna be a scorcher, they say it’ll last all week
Seems like every year or two they’re turning up the heat
Think I’ll crack a cold one and sit here under the eave
You know we take what we can get
There’s no direction to leave
They say today is cooling down and tomorrow it looks like rain
But it feels like 97 in the shade
The ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s they came to an end
For 20 years it’s been a blur, sliding downhill my friend
So I’ll sit here in the shade as the world gets hotter still
The check arrived for our drinks, now who will pay the bill?
It’s a bit of a respite, but not nearly enough
You know, they say the vibe these days has been unbearably buff
They say the air is cooling down and tomorrow we’ll have it made
But it feels like 107 in the shade
Think I’ll crack a cold one and sit here under the eave
You know we take what we can get
There’s no direction to leave
They swear the air is cooler now and, by God, we’ve got it made
I might drift on up to heaven, I’m starting to fade
‘Cause it feels like 111 here in the shade

Down to the Studs
03:47
|
|||
Are we starting over all again from where we left?
Time to reach across the table and lay the past down there to rest
Some time I will tell you of all the hell you put me through
But today we’re starting over, I don’t have a grudge with you
Yes it’s good to see you after so many years away
You know how time just keeps on flying, it all feels like yesterday
Sometime I will tell you of all the tears and sweat and blood
But for now let’s keep it simple
We’re taking it all down to the studs
Down to the studs
We’re taking it --- down to the studs
Doing everything to see if we can still be buds
Ain’t life kinda funny as we get a little down the line?
All those things that seemed so crucial, they don’t stand the test of time
Sometime I will tell you of all the tears and sweat and blood
But for now let’s keep it simple
We’re taking it all down to the studs
Down to the studs
We’re taking it --- down to the studs
Doing everything to try to find a deeper love
Down to the studs
To fortify before the flood
When it all comes raining down from the storm clouds up above
Down to the studs

Look at the Sun
04:54
|
|||
There’s a fire on the hill
Headed down to the landfill
It’s burning through the chaparral
Might jump the highway by the mall
Another day raining fire from the sky
I look up as I lay down
Watching the vultures circle ‘round
Look at the sun
Look at the sun
I feel a rumble at midday
The ground it shakes, the buildings sway
And I don’t know just what to do
Can’t save myself, I can’t save you
Brace yourself in the frame that held the door
Watch the light move down the wall
As the ceiling starts to fall
Look at the sun
Look at the sun
As the sun meets the moon in sweet surrender
All the eyes turn away toward our commander
Staring at the burning ball
Grotesque and arrogant
Put on your spectacles, old chap
We are but a fly in the ointment

Got a call last night
It was Jake checking in
We got to talking ‘bout those hiking days
He said, “Bobby how long has it been?”
And so we hit the trail
About a quarter to nine
The morning sun was shinin’ brightly
As we were searching for piece of mind
And it’s all uphill from here
We may have to stop and down these beers
Only halfway up this hill we are climbing steady still
It’s so clear, uphill from here
Those morning brews went down
And now we’re feeling the weight
One foot in front of the other
As the convo dissipates
My knee starts to swell
As the sweat starts to drip
What am I even doin’ here
On this long strange trip?
But it’s all uphill from here
Where we started out is nowhere near
Though I know we’re over the hill, we are climbing steady still
It’s all clear uphill from here
But it’s all uphill from here
Gettin’ tired bringing up the rear
Though I know we’re over the hill, we are climbing steady still
It’s so clear, uphill from here
