about
"Stay Tuned" is weekly series presented by Perpetual Doom. Every week we feature an indie artist covering a classic TV theme song. 📺🎶
"It was familial custom that forced all us grandchildren of eastern European emigres into piano lessons, starting at age 6. I was none too keen on the Thompson Red Book with its monophonic, major-scale trifles about rowboats, traffic cops, and the like- condescending, even to a toddler. At 10 I terminated my instructor with extreme prejudice, but I never stopped messing around on the old Sohmer upright we had in our home. I’d start figuring out things by ear… whatever got stuck in there due to repeated exposure- vocal melodies from Harry Belafonte songs, commercials for Mars bars and- most haunting of all- TV themes. They all succeeded in training my hands and ears where previous teachers had failed. I would often tune in to the start of one show just to hear its theme and then flip the channel hoping to catch the start of the next one, wanting to absorb as many as i could, before waiting 30-60 min for my next fix. commercial jingles would tide me over in between. to this day I’ve never actually seen a single episode of Rockford Files or One Day at a Time but i can play their theme songs like ringin' a bell, but Reading Rainbow was special- that was a show I would actually watch, and be utterly captivated by. It has remained with me, and i’d like to send my deep gratitude to LeVar Burton, as well as to Robert Wyatt and Sarah La Puerta for their additional and unfathomable inspiration on this and nearly everything I record." - Invisible Familiars (aka Jared Samuel Elioseff)
"The music industry is a dismal business rife with abysmal dimness." Luckily for Jared Samuel Elioseff, né Jared Samuel- “also known to tens of people as Invisible Familiars”, he beams- a fondness for wordplay and gallows humor seem at once both effortless and inseparable from his hard-worn cynicism. What also comes easily: a deeply enshrined command of melody and harmony, a love of the so-called “naughty chords”, an undiminished sense of wonder and awe for the audible universe, which he can readily express across many instruments, as well as in a producer role. His CV seems to match this style: wildly eclectic, firmly rooted, and forward thinking. Linear time as well as notions of genre— themselves historically mired in misogyny, racism, and commerce— all go right out the window. Clients, colleagues, and collaborators through the years (live and in the studio) so far include Aldous Harding, Kevin Morby, Yoko Ono, Thor Harris, Jolie Holland, Nels Cline, Sharon Jones, and Karen O, to name a few…
